NIMS Medicity is proud to have a separate well equipped cardiology wing styled Heart Foundation, the only one of its kind in Kerala, constructed under Freeman White Company, California headed by Dr. Madhu Sridharan. The Heart Foundation is rich in ultra modern lifesaving equipments and is intended to save life at any humanly possible condition. The quality of treatment offered is un compromised. To make heart treatments more accessible even to those who belong to financially backward class, the expenses that may be incurred for the cardiac checkups and surgeries have been reduced than that of the government rates.

Obsterics and Gynaecology Lab

NIMS Heart foundation has done 100000 angiograms, 3502 angioplasties and also 530 bypass surgeries in the short span of time. This is probably the highest rate of surgeries in this short span of time. NIMS Heart foundation has the biggest number of heart surgeries in Kerala after Ernakulam Dist. This achievement is because of the team work of Dr. Madhu Sreedharan and Dr. MAHADEVAN. along with their well trained, experienced team. Apart from this a special project named Heart to Heart has been introduced. We are proud to announce that Padmashree Bharath Mammootty is our project ambassador to the project Heart to Heart. With the help of Mammootty fans association we provide free heart surgeries to those who are under the poverty line. Under Heart to Heart project 298 open heart surgeries were done successfully. All those 123 families have gone back to normal life with new hopes and aspirations. Under the Heart to Heart project various Cardiac camps at various rural areas of Trivandrum and Kollam districts were conducted. PHILOSOPHY:

We, the Faculty of College of Nursing, NIMS College of Nursing, Thiruvananthapuram, believe that the Nursing, as a integrate health science require updating of knowledge skills, attitudes in the areas of Cardiothoracic speciality to render quality nursing care and maintain collaboration with all health professionals.

AIM:

Aim of the postgraduate programme in nursing is to prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, Consultants, Educators, Researchers and administrations in a whole variety of professional settings.

FACULTY:

Faculty consists of Dean, Principal, Vice Principal and 2 M.Sc. nursing qualified teachers in all specialities in addition to the Clinical Instructors.

LIBRARY:

The college library is provided with text books in various Clinical and non - clinical subjects. National & International Journals are also provided. (More than 3500 books are now available in the Library.)

LABORATORIES:

Well-equipped Nursing Foundation Lab, Anatomy Lab, Nutrition Lab, Community Health Lab, Maternal and Child Health Lab, AV Aids Lab, and Computer Lab are provided in the college for practical training.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Duration of the programme shall be four years. Internship Integrated practice is incorporated with respective practical hours in each year.

  • The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission (As per University Norms)
  • The minimum educational requirements shall be the passing of: Higher Secondary School Certificate Examination (12 years course), Or Senior School Certificate Examination (10+2), Pre-Degree Examination (10+2), Or An equivalent with 12 years schooling from a recognized board or university with Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and English with minimum of 50% aggregate marks.(as per INC norms)
  • Candidate shall be medically fit.

MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING:

The department of Medical and Surgical Nursing was established in the year 2009 with Under Graduate programme. The teaching programme for B.Sc(N) help the student to understand the principles and concepts of Medical Surgical Nursing and acquiring knowledge and develop professional skills in caring for patients with Medical and Surgical disorders in variety of health care settings at home and hospital.

The Postgraduate programme was established in the year of 2011. It is designed to assess the students in developing expertise and in depth knowledge in the field of Medical and Surgical nursing. It will help the student to appreciate the patients as a holistic individual and develop skill to function as a Medical and Surgical nurse. It will further enable the students to function as a nurse educator, manager and clinical researcher in the field of Medical and Surgical Nursing.

PHILOSOPHY:

Medical and Surgical Nursing department believes that nursing contributes to the health services in a vital and significant way in the health care delivery system. It aims at identifying the health needs of the people, planning and providing quality care in collaboration with other health professionals and community group. It also aims at provision of promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative aspects of care to people across their life span in wide variety of health care settings based upon application of basic concept and principles derived from the physical biological, behavioural sciences, medical and surgical nursing.

  • Apply the knowledge from physical, biological and behavioral sciences, medicine including alternative system and nursing in providing nursing care to individuals, families and communities.

PSYCHIATRIC NURSING:

The department of Mental Health Nursing was established in the year 2011 for undergraduate programme. The teaching programme for B.sc (N) students will help them to understand the principles and concepts of Mental Health Nursing and acquiring knowledge and develop professional skills in caring for patients with psychiatric illnesses in variety of Health care settings in the Hospital and at home.

It is designed to assess the students in developing expertise and in depth knowledge in the field of specialty Mental Health Nursing. The program helps the student to appreciate the patients as a holistic individual and develop skills to function as a specialized Mental Health Nurse and also enable the student to function as a specialty educator, Manager, Researcher in the field of Mental Health Nursing.

PHILOSOPHY:

  • Believe that the Post graduate program in Mental Health Nursing is essential to prepare Nurses to improve the quality of Psychiatric and Mental health Nursing education and practice in India and Internationally.
  • Realize that Post graduation program in Mental Health Nursing builds upon and extends competence acquired at the graduate levels, emphasizes application of relevant theories into Mental health Nursing practice and development of specialty research skills.

    The aim of the Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing program in Nursing is to prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as Registered Nurse Specialists, Educators, and Administrators in a wide variety of health care settings.

    OBJECTIVES:

  • Apply the knowledge from physical, biological and behavioral sciences, medicine including alternative system and nursing in providing nursing care to individuals, families and communities.
  • Apply the Nursing process in the care of patients with mental disorders in Hospital and Community.
  • Demonstrate advanced skills/competence in Nursing management of patients with Mental disorders.
  • Identify and care for special groups like children, adolescents, women, elderly, Abused and neglected people living with HIV/AIDS.

    The department of community health nursing was established in the year 2009 to with Under Graduate programme. The teaching programme for B.Sc(N) students will help them to understand the principles and concepts of community health nursing and acquire knowledge & develop professional skills in caring for clients in the community.

    It is designed to assess the students in developing expertise and in depth knowledge in the field of Community health nursing. It will help the student to appreciate the patients as a holistic individual and develop skill to function as a specialized Community Health Nursing. It will further enable the students to function as an educator, manager, researcher in the field of Community Health Nursing.

    At the end of the community health nursing course the student will be able to,

    • Function efficiently as a community health nurse at various levels of health care delivery system
    • Work effectively as a community health nurse by integrating principles of various levels of prevention plan and organize various clinics including the principles of national and state level programmes
    • Participate in various health programmes applying the principles of supervision, education and effective communication demonstrate the right knowledge , skill, and attitude in caring for individuals and families in the community.
    • Exhibit accountability in teaching and supervising the primary health care personnel at various levels of health care delivery system in imparting a comprehensive community nursing care record and reports vital and day to day events that occur among families and communities.

    This department offers programs to help the professionals understand the basic principles of family and community health in rural and urban areas. Clinical Experience for both undergraduate and postgraduate students is provided at the Community Health Centre, Poonthurai, Taluk Hospital Neyyattinkara and Primary Health Centre Balaramapuram.

    OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY

    The department of obstetrics and gynecological nursing was established in the year 2011 for undergraduate programme. The teaching programme for B.Sc. (Nursing) students will help them to understand the principles and concepts of obstetrics and gynecological nursing and acquiring knowledge and develop professional skills in caring for mothers with normal physiological changes and disorders related to pregnancy and child birth in variety of health care settings at home and in hospitals.

    It was designed to assess the students in developing expertise and in depth knowledge in the field of obstetrics and gynecological nursing. The programme help the students to appreciate the patients as holistic individual and develop skill to function as a specialized obstetrics and gynecological nursing and also enable the students to function as an educator, manager, researcher in the field of obstetrics and gynecological nursing.

    AIM

    The aim of the obstetrics and gynecological nursing program in nursing is to prepare under and post graduates to resume responsibilities as registered midwife specialists, educators, administrators in a wide variety of professional settings.

    OBJECTIVES

    On completion of the OBG nursing programme, the student is able to,

    • Describe the epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology and diagnostic asessment of women with obstetric and gynecological conditions
    • Perform physical, psychosocial, cultural & spiritual assessment of antenatal intranatal and postnatal.
    • Demonstrate competence in caring for women with obstetrical and gynecological conditions and manage obstetrical emergencies.
    • Demonstrate competence in caring for high risk newborn.
    • Identify and Manage obstetrical and neonatal emergencies as per protocol.
    • Practice infection control measures.
    • Utilize recent technology and various diagnostic, therapeutic modalities in the management of obstetrical, gynecological and neonatal care.
    • Demonstrate skill in handling various equipments/ gadgets used for obstetrical, gynecological and neonatal care.
    • Teach and supervise nurses and allied health workers in the work settings.
    • Design a layout of specialty units of obstetrics and gynecology.
    • Develop standards for obstetrical and gynecological nursing practice.
    • Counsel women and families.
    • Able to conduct research in the field of obstetrical and gynecological nursing.
    • Function as independent midwifery nurse practitioner.

    This department imparts in depth knowledge and skills for undergraduate students in child birth and labour procedures. Students learn to give total care to normal and high risk women during pregnancy, labour and pueperium.
